About this Program:

This session will address the latest developments affecting impacting employers and examine changes expected now that health care reform has passed.

Health Care Reform:  Comprehensive health care reform passed last month will take many years to unfold.  There are, however, steps which employers should take in 2010 to assure compliance, preserve opportunities, and educate employees on what the law does – and doesn’t – do.

Technology in the Workplace:  Widespread use of new software and hardware – especially portable devices — from smart phones to FaceBook, raises the stakes in the battle over maintaining control over proprietary information, places workplace privacy at increased risk & provides greater insight into candidates for employment.  Failing to adopt comprehensive policies & practices can create both business & litigation risks.

Privacy – ADA, FMLA, GINA, HIPAA and other complications:  The adoption of new privacy protections along with amendments to major employee related laws require careful attention to the proper acquisition, use and disclosure of personal employee and family information.

Who Should Attend:

  • Human Resource Professionals
  • Supervisors
  • Managers

Your Instructor:

Tom Dixon, Esq.

Mr. Dixon, of Eastman and Smith, practices throughout Ohio in the area of management labor and employment law.  His practice covers the range of employment issues, including counseling on employment policies and handbooks, training of supervisors and managers, representation in administrative proceedings, defending discrimination claims, and providing guidance on the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, drug testing, sexual harassment, wage‑hour matters, and a variety of other issues.  He also provides assistance on union organizational campaigns, union avoidance, negotiation and administration of labor contracts, labor arbitration, wrongful discharge, employment‑at‑will litigation and civil rights litigation.

Ben Goff

Mr. Goff is the co-founder and President of Great Lakes Risk Management, an employee benefits brokerage and management company established in 1985, which joined Brown and Brown Insurance in 2008.  With over 25 years experience in the employee benefits and group insurance industry, Ben specializes in all aspects of strategic planning, contract negotiations and plan design, with a concentration in financing options and regulatory compliance.  As the benefits leader for Brown & Brown of Ohio's Employee Benefits practice, Ben works with other regional leaders, account executives, and account managers as a mentor and subject-matter expert, in addition to managing his own clientele.
